It is very much a requirement in our household that the mat be able to withstand her activity [and her claws]. These mats do the trick, where other yoga mats have sorely failed. If you do yoga on a regular basis this is the mat for you, there is no better. I bought this mat for my brother's birthday (he's currently doing the Insanity workout).
It weighs about 10 pounds. Overall, as a regular yoga practitioner and teacher, I feel it is well worth the money for someone who does a lot of yoga. The 71" Black Mat is a quality product. Its expense is more than offset by the value it offers.
Anyway, the prep-work isn't too onerous, just annoying. I bought this mat about one month ago, and have used it about 6 times. Please understand that I'm comparing this to a garbage Embark mat from Target. That mat had me slipping and resulted in extra pressure in my hands and knees during certain poses. I ordered this one after reading the reviews but I guess it didn't sink in how heavy this baby is. If you only have to carry this to class, you're golden. It's great. Going through multiple cheap mats was definitely a waste of money.
There's also an 85 inch version for you giants out there! It's also wider (26 inches) than most yoga mats.
It is heavy. Pick up a 7 pound weight and see what seven pounds feels like.
I also bought the Lumi towel (large size), also by Manduka, to put on the mat, since my hands and feet tend to sweat by the time I get to the middle of my routine, and this can make any mat slippery. I didn't have any trouble with the coating on the mat -- it wore off after a little bit, and I used the towel until it did. It has been through a lot of tough and demanding workouts such as Plyometrics and CardioX and it still looks the same as the day I bought it. I originally felt iffy about spending $80 on a yoga mat, but now that I have I'm happy because I know I will never need to buy another one for the rest of my life.
Yoga mats come in three basic thicknesses. At 1/4" this one tops even the thickest sticky mats.
This mat is heavier than most, but it truly makes a difference. Manduka BlackMatPRO 71-Inch Yoga and Pilates Mat Simple and sweet, it's worth the money.
Also note that the roll this yoga mat makes is huge, something to consider if between practice storage space is an issue. The "thick" mats at 3/16" will still provide extra cushion without the hassle but if you've tried them and they're still not enough, this might be the way to go.

About the Author:
The last time that I called the manufacturer, they mentioned that Manduka mats use a "closed cell" technology which keeps water out of the mat (mitigating the need for periodic cleaning) but necessarily keeps water on the surface of mat. de longhi esam3300 espresso machine magnifica super automatic.
